Contributions to the Mechanisms of the Lightning Stroke*

چکیده
The writer’s earlier paper on the mechanism of the cloud-to-ground lightning stroke was based on classical observational data. The report on the last 10 years’ observations of strokes from Monte San Salvatore by Berger and Vogelsanger using improved instrumentation calls for a reassessment of the theory and makes possible a tentative extension t o the intracloud stroke mechanisms. The salient new findings from Monte San Salvatore are summarized. The theory of the writer is then considered in terms of the observations. The theory in general is confirmed by these observations and certain more hypothetical conjectures are confirmed by the greater detail available in the new observations. No serious contradictions appear requiring alteration of the theory. Probably the most significant new observations deal with the nature of the positive leader strokes which had not previously been observed in detail. These, together with the very important 1964 observations of Brook and Kitagawa on intracloud strokes, furnish the basis for a tentative analysis of the mechanisms active.

Closed-Form Solutions for Broad-Band Equivalent Circuit of Vertical Rod Buried in Lossy Grounds Subjected to Lightning Strokes
Abstract— In this paper, input impedance of a vertical rod under lightning stroke is first computed by applying the method of moments (MoM) on the Maxwell’s equations. The circuit model is then achieved through applying modified vector fitting (MVF) on the computed input impedance. After then the equivalent circuit is again extracted for a few values of soil conductivity and rod radius. Finally...
متن کاملElectromagnetic Field Due to Lightning Strikes to Mountainous Ground
The produced electric and magnetic fields due to lightning strikes to mountainous ground are determined in this paper. For the sake of simplicity a cone-shaped ground with finite conductivity is assumed to represent a natural nonflat ground. By this assumption, we deal with an axillary symmetrical structure so we use the cylindrical 2D-FDTD to save the simulation memory and time, dramatically. ...
متن کاملOne case of a lightning strike leads to death: case report
Background: Lightning is one of the most mysterious phenomena of nature that also, it has caused many financial and human losses. In tropical and sub-tropical countries, death due to thunderbolt is not unusual, and even tragic events may occur at high altitudes. Lightning physics is complex and not completely clear. Usually, the clouds are heavily pregnant and high voltages and amperages, they ...

Objective(s):Every year, a large number of people lose their lives due to stroke. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Surprisingly, recent studies have shown that preconditioning with hyperoxia (HO) increases tissue tolerance to ischemia, ultimately reducing damages caused by stroke. Addressed in this study are beneficial contributions from HO preconditioning into reduced har...

The study of the interaction of lightning electromagnetic fields with electrical systems and the design of appropriate protection strategies are generally based on statistical distributions of the lightning current measured at the channel base using either instrumented towers or artificial initiation of lightning using rockets. Recent studies based both on numerical modeling and experimental ob...
